Lawn Fertilization Calendar
Lawns will benefit greatly from fertilization. We recommend using a complete fertilizer like 16-4-8, 10-10-10 or 6-6-6 with 50% water insoluble nitrogen (slow release). The recommendation for lawns without a soil test is to apply 1 pound of 50% water insoluble nitrogen per 100 square feet. To determine this amount, divide the nitrogen (first number on fertilizer label) into 100, this will be the pounds to apply per 1,000 square feet (10 × 100).
For example, if using 16-4-8 the calculation would be 100 divided by 16 = 6.2 pounds of this fertilizer per 1,000 square feet. If using 10-10-10 you would use 100 divided by 10 or 10 pounds per 1,000 square feet. Follow the same calculations to determine the amount to apply since many of these formulas vary with the brand. For more detailed information on lawn fertilization, see the Home Fertilization page of UF/IFAS's Turfgrass Web site.
